Below is a detailed check-list of how to apply to the Master of Arts graduate degree program at the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research. Please also see the UF Admissions Graduate Application page. If you are already a graduate degree-seeking student in another department or program at UF, and are interested in doing a Certificate through the Center, please refer to the Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies page or the Graduate Certificate in Gender and Development page, for application information.

What should be submitted to the UF Office of Admissions:

• ONLINE APPLICATION: All applicants must complete the Online Application available from the UF Office of Admission.

• TESTS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency and meet the minimum score requirements. The university does not accept scores compiled from multiple tests to meet English proficiency requirements. (Please review this page for more information.) Students who meet the following conditions may be exempt from the English language test requirements: a. International students whose native language is English b. International students who have spent at least 1 academic year in a degree-seeking program at a college or university in a country where English is the official language if their attendance was in the year immediately prior to UF admission.

• TRANSCRIPTS: The Office of Admissions allows the submission of unofficial transcripts for evaluation during the application process. Center’s policy is if you are admitted, you must submit all final official academic credentials, including official transcripts, with your acceptance of the offer of admission. (The Office of Admissions requires all final official academic credentials to be received by the first semester in order for continued enrollment.) For admission purposes, the University requires a GPA of 3.0 for junior and senior years as an undergraduate. Women’s Studies, however, requires a 3.2. Faculty in the Center will look carefully, in addition to your undergraduate GPA, at your GPA for any graduate work which you have done. English translations of non-English transcripts are required in addition to the originals.

• CV or Résumé: All applicants must submit their latest résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) with the application via CollegeNET (the online portal that UF uses to collect admission applications).“Pursuant to Florida Statute, your application requires inclusion of all post-high school education and employment, as well as information about ongoing international affiliations and research funding. Please ensure this information is included on your curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé.

While the UF Admissions online application requires you submit a short statement of purpose, often people prefer to submit a slightly longer statement of intellectual purpose. The Center also prefers such a longer statement. There is no requirement as to length or content, but two pages single-spaced is a rough guideline. The statement should tell us something about your background, why you wish to pursue a graduate degree in Women’s Studies, and what topics you wish to explore. Please be as specific as possible about your research interests, your long-term career plans, and how these correspond to the research specializations of faculty members in our Center. Your admission to the MA degree program is dependent upon finding a faculty member who is a good match to supervise your work.

• Writing Sample: Submit a writing sample of up to 25 pages. (We suggest a paper written for a class or undergraduate thesis.)

• 3 Letters of Recommendation (In order to send a link to your recommenders for submitting a letter of recommendation, you will need to start your online application. You may do this before completing and submitting the rest of your application. Once you do so, you may access links to send to those who will write letters of recommendation. The admissions office will not receive any letters submitted via these links until your application is officially submitted.)
